Optical glass lenses can be manufactured using various methods, including conventional grinding and polishing and precision glass molding. In precision glass molding, glass is heated to a controlled forming temperature and pressed into shape using high-precision molds.
ISUZU GLASS specializes in precision glass molding and has been developing and manufacturing molded glass lenses since 1969.
Compared with conventional polishing, precision glass molding is particularly well suited to complex geometries and volume production. It can be an effective manufacturing method for aspherical lenses and other designs that are difficult or inefficient to produce through conventional polishing.
This article introduces the main steps in the ISUZU GLASS precision glass molding process.
The glass material is heated to a precisely controlled temperature at which it can be formed.
The softened glass is pressed using dedicated high-precision molds. Each mold is manufactured to the required lens geometry, with temperature precisely controlled during the molding process.
Forming the lens directly with precision molds enables consistent dimensional accuracy and efficient volume production.
After molding, the lenses are transferred to an annealing furnace for gradual and uniform cooling. This controlled cooling process helps minimize internal stress and maintain stable optical quality.
After annealing, the lenses proceed to any required secondary processes. Depending on the product requirements, these may include polishing, anti-reflection (AR) coatings, and strengthening treatments.
Finished lenses undergo dimensional measurement and visual inspection before shipment.
